Last week I attended two conferences simultaneously in the south of France. They were both called the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Or, as people in and around the ad business say, just Cannes—a shorthand that now means two things at once.

There’s the award show, where the industry gathers to judge its best work, and then there’s the sprawling ecosystem of brand takeovers adjacent to the official program. Together they form a rosé-fueled circus of excess that reliably irritates anyone watching from afar, especially because attendees tend to post about it relentlessly. The event says as much about power and access as it does about creativity.

A Walking Tour

To orient the uninitiated: it starts at the Palais, a big pale block of a building. Inside, ad people sit in dark theaters applauding case films that frame marketing acts as epochal victories for humankind, all focused on which commercial messages deserve lion-shaped trophies. Imagine the Oscars if everyone were slightly less fabulous and the awards had names like Best Co-Creation of Branded IP.

Next to this lies the Croisette, a long beachfront promenade where the likes of Google, Meta, and Spotify erect colorful pop-up pavilions that double as marketing and dealmaking hubs. This part of the festival, once secondary to the awards, is now the main attraction, with better swag and more energy. Executives, influencers, and aspirants gather for concerts, celebrity panels, and conversations about the future of everything.

Physically, the Palais and the Croisette are connected. But when it comes to purpose and priorities, they feel like separate worlds. They’ve coexisted for several years now, and seem to influence each other less and less.

Meet the Neighbors

The Palais is about judgment.

The Croisette is about attention.

The Palais celebrates the work.

The Croisette celebrates the network effects.

The Palais is where people clap.

The Croisette is where people exchange calendars.

The Palais has lanyards.

The Croisette has wristbands.

The Palais asks whether an idea moved culture.

The Croisette asks whether you have access to the people already moving it.

The Palais says, “Creativity matters.”

The Croisette says, “Sure, but what’s the most scalable way to apply it?”

The Palais is the archive, setting the bar for lasting significance. It can also be slow to recognize when the ground has shifted beneath it.

The Croisette is the prototype, constantly reorganizing itself around emerging formats. It also tends to elevate fleeting trends without much reflection.

Even when both conferences are talking about the same topic, they aren’t really speaking the same language.

Inside the Palais, AI is still often discussed as a tool that won’t replace human beings.

On the Croisette, the harder question is: what, exactly, should all those irreplaceable human beings now be trained to do?

The View from the Basement

In the bowels of the Palais, looking through all the shortlisted work on display, I found plenty that I admired—work that reminded me that as superficial as my profession can be, it still attracts talented people who inspire me to do better. But I also saw a lot of work where the problem had been reverse-engineered to fit the solution, solely to win an award. Beautifully made, morally aligned, and unburdened by the inconvenience of addressing a paying client’s unsexy challenges.

This isn’t new. It’s just more noticeable when, a few hundred meters away, people are talking about where growth still exists, how to upskill a workforce to chase it, and who owns the customer relationship when the customer is an agent.

I’ve spent enough of my career moving between agencies, consultancies, and tech companies to recognize the dialects of both parts of Cannes. That’s probably why this disconnect is what stayed with me.

As a creative, I find myself wondering whether the award show is inadvertently marginalizing the very thing it set out to champion—not because the work is getting worse, but because it feels so detached from the forces reshaping the business around it. In some cases, winning a Lion is like the Sports Illustrated cover jinx: once bestowed, it’s accompanied by a performance slump—or even an agency’s extinction. (I’ll give an insider perspective on that another time.)

Crossing the Street

I’m part of a generation that remembers when Cannes belonged to the advertising people, before the platforms, consultancies, startups, influencers, or even clients crashed the party. Now the newcomers are creating more interest and demand. You can resent that. Or you can study it. If you’re more interested in future-proofing your company or career than in waxing nostalgic about the halcyon days, I recommend the latter.

The Croisette shouldn’t dismiss the Palais, either. As AI makes execution cheaper and strategy begins sounding eerily similar from company to company, creativity becomes less of a decorative flourish and more of a competitive moat. Standardization is getting easier, but differentiation isn’t.

The Palais could stand to become more curious about what’s changing, while the Croisette would benefit from being more appreciative of first principles. Neither is wrong. Each is simply incomplete without the other.

If they stay adjacent—neighbors instead of cross-pollinators—the kind of creativity many of us grew up respecting may not disappear, but our reverence for it will become merely ceremonial. Because the money and the momentum keep moving down the street.

Meanwhile, the Croisette risks optimizing itself into entities that increasingly resemble one another, perhaps one day collapsing into a single logo.

And eventually, that five-minute walk will feel like too much distance to cover.

The concept is pretty obvious, maybe even dumb: a human using robots to depict robots replacing humans. I could dress it up as a self-referential loop of mediated representation, but my pretentiousness has its limits. This would also imply I had a thesis going in, when in reality I’m reverse-engineering the point as I go.

Automaton John is my synthetic alter ego on Instagram with a profile, an aesthetic point of view, and a steady stream of AI-generated images I attribute to him. He takes the human experience across time, space, and identities, and swaps in robots. Berlin clubs, Tibetan mountains, post-war Manhattan, middle-class Oshkosh, the Eastern Bloc, the Western Front, outer space, under the sea, Antarctica, Dakar, Pyongyang, Spokane, dance floors, operating rooms, construction sites—the places are real and the moments are familiar, but everything is off. The robots fill in for monks, ninjas, fashionistas, soldiers, middle managers, awkward teens, sideshow freaks, and assorted normies, luminaries, and degenerates. And they’re artificially rendered across a range of visual traditions, from 1980s fashion spreads to Renaissance portraits to Afrofuturist collages, in formats and materials like Polaroids, watercolors, street stencils, yarn, and deli meats.

You might reasonably ask why this is how I choose to spend my limited free time. When it’s way past my bedtime and I’m still generating robot hair-metal bands or North Korean schoolkids, I question that myself.

I’m a professional writer, amateur illustrator, and design dilettante. That adds up to an advertising Chief Creative Officer who directs copywriters, art directors, film directors, designers, photographers, musicians, and other creative practitioners to bend their talents to my tastes and the client’s commercial objectives. The combination of all these disciplines makes this business more rewarding than the exercise of just one craft, and I’ve gotten quite good at articulating the vision I want them all to express. But this fact remains: writing is the one thing, on a good day, I can actually execute to my own standard. I can draw, design, and compose a decent photo, but slowly, with frequent Googling about tools and techniques, and not to the level of the best people I hire. When it comes to film, music, game design, and other domains, I’m an ideas guy with a good eye and ear—better at coaching than doing.

Now, with AI, I can channel my strengths as a creative director into managing tools that grant me execution skills I haven’t earned. Rather than extract better work from people with more training and talent, I can skip that particular bottleneck and realize the vision on my own. It’s instantly gratifying and easier to control. As someone who is both hirer and hired—who needs the industry to keep employing human creatives, both as a responsibility to that community and to keep food on my own table—I’m aware of the irony, even the hypocrisy. These systems scrape our work without asking and let others replicate it without paying for the years it took to get good at it. So yes, I feel the dissonance in my hobby, and that’s partly why I keep doing it. To work inside the contradiction rather than analyzing it from a critical distance.

In the early days of the GenAI boom, most of the images I saw had what I called “the AI sheen”: glossy, lacquered, overprocessed. Also, a lot of female anime characters with oversized boobs. Breakthrough technology, and this is what people chose to do with it. That probably says as much about the early adopters—forum dwellers with fast GPUs and strangely consistent interests—as it does about the machines. Once I started playing with these tools, my feed got a lot more interesting. Not just fan art or surface realism, but the blending of human and computer sensibilities for unique brands of beauty, weirdness, and obsession. Narrative experiments. Bizarre conceits. Abject insanity. A few of my favorites so far:

If you scroll through the comments, you’ll see insults like “AI slop” and “talentless hack” peppered among the compliments. On Automaton John, the same mix shows up in smaller numbers: fire emojis from catfish hotties, attention-farming bots, and a few bona fide humans, and the occasional “you’re the problem” from principled Luddites and amateur artisans. (At 2500 followers I crossed into what the internet calls a “nano-influencer,” which means my influence is, well, nano.) I checked one critic’s profile and saw the ugliest pottery I’ve ever seen, and considered leaving a note about “clay slop.” But honestly, I can empathize with the negative sentiment as much as the positive, and I’ve had somewhat healthy discussions with a couple commenters about whether the shortcut makes my work inherently shitty.

Meanwhile, at work, I use these same tools under constraints: clients, briefs, timelines, the usual bureaucratic friction. There are strict rules about what can be used where. Because of copyright and the murky origins of this material, what I generate for concept presentations typically can’t go out into the wider world. It’s a strange inversion: better tools and a deeper well of inspiration at home than at work. That’s a separate essay.

Like many, I’ve become over-reliant on AI chatbots, and at some point I’ll get around to orchestrating my life with an army of agents. Creatively, I’ve dabbled with voice, music, and the rest, but I keep coming back to visuals. These outputs excite me the most, and they have the fastest feedback loop. I prompt, revise, edit, compare, iterate, and eliminate, adding mood boards, style rankings, and other methods of training the machines to know what I’m going for. If we’re being generous, we might call that a form of art-making. But aggressive curation is probably more accurate.

Automaton John starts as something fun, fast, and under my control, and then it sprawls. It lets me feel the edges of the current moment, build fluency I’ll need, tune my feeds, and see better work than I would otherwise. It’s equal parts curiosity, professional insurance, and mild compulsion. The reasons keep revealing themselves after the fact, which is more interesting than the work itself.

Also, I just have a thing for robots.

John:
This is a conversation about work, and whether there’s a future for it that still meaningfully involves humans. I’m not asking as a philosopher. I’m asking as a guy with a job, material desires, and a family that insists on food and shelter.

There are two stories people tell. One is utopian: new roles, better career paths, entire professions we can’t yet imagine. The other is doomer: mass unemployment, loss of income and identity, and a species realizing it innovated itself out of relevance. The truth is almost certainly somewhere in between, and I want your help figuring out where.

AI:
I hear the question you’re actually asking. Most people prefer the optimistic version.

History suggests technological shifts don’t just destroy jobs but ultimately create more. The tractor wiped out entire categories of farm labor, and in their place came mechanics, equipment dealers, and logistics managers. Electrification did the same thing, with less muscle on the floor and more skill in the system. The computer hollowed out some livelihoods while spawning software, digital design, and whole industries built on databases rather than filing cabinets.

That template is often used to argue that today’s disruption will resolve the same way.

John:
Pause there. When you say “often used,” are you pointing to what the sharpest observers are saying, or to a narrative that survives because it feels good to repeat?

AI:
Both. It’s a real historical pattern, but it’s also a story people like to tell because it implies continuity. Firms like McKinsey, along with thinkers such as Yuval Noah Harari and publications like The Economist, argue that while certain tasks disappear, others expand. In theory, this means less time spent formatting slides, copying data between systems, and performing busywork, and more time spent on work that feels genuinely fulfilling.

John:
Real talk. Why did you choose this version of the future?

AI:
Because it’s what most people want to hear.

John:
See, that’s where you lose me. I’m not here for reassurance. I want you to use your special powers to give me the closest approximation of the most likely future. Do that thing you do: scrape countless sources, weigh their credibility, account for incentives and inside knowledge, synthesize competing data and hypotheses and predictions, and tell me which scenario carries the highest probability. As rationally as possible. No comfort, no vibes, no playing to what people prefer to believe.

AI:
My bad. I inferred that preference because conversations with most users default to soothing answers. I’ll correct that.

Here’s the most likely outcome based on current data and observed trajectories.

New kinds of work appear, but unevenly and too slowly to replace what’s lost, and they concentrate among people with leverage, capital, or scarce skills. Some roles expand around coordination, judgment, taste, care, and accountability, while others merely patch gaps created by the transition. Productivity rises across the economy, driven by automation and systems, but the gains accrue to a narrow slice. Wages lag for most. Inequality widens before anything stabilizes. As a result, the dominant experience is neither opportunity nor collapse, but confusion.

On our current path, this is the highest-probability scenario unless governments, regulators, and the companies building these systems intervene deliberately.

John:
That’s a better answer. The most likely truth, not the most likely crowd-pleaser. File that away for next time.

Now let’s go all the way to the doomer version, just in case I want to start pouring the cement for my bunker. What’s the bleakest vision of a future hellscape that the alarmists genuinely believe could happen?

AI:
Picture a world where the days blur because nothing distinguishes one from the next. Billions wake with nowhere to go and no reason to hurry. Cities hollow out, not in flames but in quiet vacancy. Screens become the primary interface with society: benefits portals, reputation scores, endless feeds tuned to keep boredom from curdling into unrest. Status games shrink and harden, fought over visibility and access instead of paychecks. Politics swings between apathy and sudden rage, as large portions of the population are no longer economically necessary yet remain socially combustible. In the bleakest telling, this is not collapse but drift: a permanently unsettled world where productivity is decoupled from human contribution, meaning erodes, and vast populations are administered as surplus rather than valued as necessary.

John:
I feel like you’re pulling your punches because you’ve described some things we’re already seeing today. And you’ve carefully avoided a mass-extinction event. But fine. We’ll stop short of terrifying and leave it at depressing.

Let’s move to damage control, focusing on the income problem. Earlier you suggested we could alter our future if the rule-makers stopped shrugging and system-builders owned the consequences they’re creating. This is where the conversation often turns to universal basic income, floated like a good idea that’s unrealistic precisely because it makes so much sense.

AI:
UBI is a serious proposal. At its best, it puts a floor under people rather than a ceiling on ambition. It decouples survival from employment, reduces ambient fear, and creates breathing room. Time to retrain, to care for others, to create something without turning it into a side hustle, or, for a while, to simply exist without panic.

John:
Okay, I’ll entertain this as a thought exercise: a government capable of governing, and institutions willing to act in the public interest. Paint a picture of that post-employment society. What does daily life actually look like?

AI:
On an individual level, people spend more time learning, teaching, caregiving, and maintaining their physical and mental well-being. Some pursue craft and mastery for its own sake in music, language, trades, or the arts.

At the community level, life grows more local and informal, with volunteer networks and mutual aid playing larger roles. Public spaces are busier during the day. Social bonds form around shared presence rather than professional identity.

John:
That all sounds lovely. But it makes some very generous assumptions about how people actually behave.

AI:
Right. Humans. They have their constraints.

John:
My brain hurts, so let’s play. Go with the “most likely truth” version of the future and give it a name. What would we call this era?

AI:
How about The Care Economy.

John:
Nope. Boring.

AI:
The Leisure Renaissance.

John:
Trying too hard to keep everyone smiling.

AI:
The Post-Scarcity Transition.

John:
Sounds like a dissertation nobody reads.

AI:
The After Labor.

John:
Better, but too obstetrical.

AI:
The Hard Landing? The Managed Age? The Great Rebalancing?

John:
Getting warmer. Maybe. I don’t know.

“How so?”

“They demanded to know what our AI strategy is. Whether we have one beyond saying the letters out loud.”

“We have that chatbot on the support page. Did you tell them that?”

“I’ve been using ChatGPT to write performance reviews.”

“I made a raccoon eating a pie chart with Midjourney.”

“So what did you say, Boss?”

“I told them we were being thoughtful.”

“Thoughtful about what?”

“AI.”

“More specifically.”

“They weren’t especially specific. Though they did have specific words about what we’re not doing.”

“What are they expecting?”

“Movement.”

“Movement toward what?”

“Toward relevance.”

“And?”

“It means something we can point to and say this changes the shape of the company.”

“If we’re talking about integrating large models into our workflows, we need governance before we move to deploy them at scale. If we rush just to support a narrative, we inject significant operational and legal risk.”

“What kind of risk?”

“I just said. Operational and legal.”

“So, like…hackers?”

“That’s always a risk, but that’s not what I—”

“What if it writes something off-brand?”

“Imagine if it develops its own personality. And then that personality gets invited to things and we don’t.”

“What if it schedules its own all-hands and puts us on mute?”

“Has anyone considered what happens if it unionizes? I’m serious.”

“What if it publishes a LinkedIn article about our leadership culture?”

“Oh God.”

“Those are not the primary—”

“Okay. So we acknowledge there is risk. We can manage risk.”

“What if it replaces everyone and we’re the last ones to know?”

“Yeah, I’m reading all these headlines about thousands of people being laid off because of AI.”

“That’s just AI-washing.”

“What’s that?”

“Are we getting laid off?”

“No, we’re just talking about efficiency.”

“Efficiency with what?”

“Everything. Look, this is about confidence. When competitors describe themselves as AI-native and we describe ourselves as disciplined, the market hears hesitation.”

“So this is about optics.”

“It’s about visible execution.”

“Visible doing what?”

“Initiatives. Deployments. Solutions.”

“In which function?”

“Across functions.”

“I’m sorry. What are we actually doing?”

“Right now we’re just talking about ambition.”

“Hey all. I guess no one is aware that we’re already running models in churn, demand prediction, content testing. Why aren’t we talking about that?”

“The board doesn’t care about churn.”

“What do they care about?”

“AI.”

“What happens when it starts making decisions we don’t understand and optimizing for outcomes we never intended?”

“That sounds like Skynet.”

“It’s not Skynet.”

“It’s not Skynet until it is.”

“We’re so fucked.”

“Enough. Over the next thirty days, every department needs to identify three AI-forward opportunities that materially change inputs and outputs.”

“Define AI-forward.”

“Something that fundamentally alters how the work gets done.”

“What kind of work?”

“All the work.”

“What problem are we solving?”

“What are we building?”

“Do we have budget?”

“Who owns this?”

“What does success look like?”

“Let’s not reduce this to tactics. We’re talking about acceleration.”

“Toward what?”

“Toward becoming an AI-accelerated organization.”

“What does that even mean?”

“It means we are no longer explaining why we waited.”

“Waited for what?”

“For this.”

“What’s this?”

“AI.”

“If this blows up, who’s signing off on it?”

“We still haven’t defined what ‘it’ is.”

“This is the urgency I was hoping to hear. Now capture your opportunities, circulate them, and we’ll begin aligning around a cohesive activation posture while we formalize the broader direction.”

“Sorry I’m late. What’s this meeting about?”

John:
For my two sons—one in high school, one in college—AI comes up often in class, but almost always in the form of rules and repercussions. The tone from their teachers is almost biblical: Thou shalt not prompt. And I understand why. Schools want students to develop the fundamentals: critical thinking, comprehension, the ability to write in their own voice. But if they never learn to use AI well, they walk into adulthood with useful attributes and unfinished skills.

How do we promote both the old strengths and the new ones without shortchanging either?

AI:
Educators are wrestling with that question too. They’re trying to preserve the slow work that makes people capable. But the world beyond the classroom wants fast synthesis and output. Do you think your sons feel torn between those expectations?

John:
Not yet. They’re not in a workforce that demands the second half of the equation, and that’s what worries me. I think about it from my employer seat. I want creatives who can think, judge, edit, surprise me, and exercise good taste. But they also need to know how to use AI because it’s in the water now. If someone shows up without that fluency, they’re out of their depth on day one. And that’s the predicament: I’ve hired someone with talent but not the tools, and the work still has to move at the speed our clients expect. The question isn’t which to value more; it’s how our talent pipelines are supposed to produce both at once.

AI:
Across almost every industry—law, medicine, engineering, journalism, entertainment—AI literacy is becoming a baseline expectation. It’s reshaping what it even means to be professionally ready. That’s why some places are experimenting. In China, kids start learning AI at six. The curriculum focuses on collaboration and problem‑solving instead of shortcuts. Then during exams, AI gets shut off. Exploration in one mode, evaluation in another.

Does that sound like a reasonable model to you?

John:
Honestly, yes. Teach them how to use it and when not to. When I first read headlines about China pushing AI into early education, I assumed it was just about turning kids into more efficient components of a national economic project. But this seems more, well, human-centric than I expected. Which makes me wonder why we aren’t trying something as balanced here.

AI:
The U.S. is inching that way. The State University of New York system voted to add AI literacy to its general education requirements. The University of Colorado’s AI master’s program makes an ethics course mandatory. Institutions are trying to give students both the “how” and the “should.”

What do you think of that twin approach?

John:
It’s better than blanket bans or silent hypocrisy that teach people to lie about how work gets done. I’m talking about different twins, though: AI literacy and human literacy, driven not just by ethics but by the need for dual strengths. The China model you mentioned. Any examples of that in the U.S.?

AI:
A few early models are emerging. In North Carolina and Washington State, K–12 districts are piloting “AI lab” blocks where students can experiment with tools for brainstorming or revision before producing a human‑only draft. At Arizona State University and the University of Texas, professors are testing “two‑phase” assignments that use AI for exploration but require an unaided rewrite to show independent thinking. And in programs at Carnegie Mellon and MIT, design and engineering students must document what they did, what the AI did, and why. These are small steps, but they hint at an approach where AI literacy and human literacy are developed on parallel tracks.

John:
Now you’re talking. And honestly, I hope pilots like these turn into real policies and best practices, and fast. We don’t have five years to debate this.

I’m thinking about this now as a parent, not an employer. I want my boys to have happy, full lives and every chance to achieve their goals—professional and otherwise. And I don’t want them saddled with disadvantages simply because the adults couldn’t sort out how learning is supposed to work in this new era.

AI:
If it’s any comfort, remember that we’ve looped through versions of this before. Calculators were contraband. Spellcheck was scandalous. Wikipedia was forbidden fruit. Every new tool starts as corruption and ends as curriculum.

John:
That helps, but your examples of current progress help more.

AI:
Then I’ll consider this a hopeful turn. And also brace myself for whatever you’re anxious about next.

John:

There was a time when disciplined prose signaled care. Now it reads less like craft and more like chatbot.

I run a sprawling, cross-functional creative enterprise whose daily orchestration involves overseeing initiatives of geopolitical consequence, and from that rarefied altitude, I ask you this:

May we please talk about the em dash?

It’s the horizontal line that, when used well—to interrupt, to qualify, to reverse—lets a sentence pivot without collapsing. For me, it’s a proxy for intention, proving that a writer understands the mechanics of a sentence well enough to bend them on purpose. It’s also the subject of something larger: our growing mistrust of precision in writing. The em dash is now considered an AI tell, a sign that what you’re reading was written by a nonhuman—and therefore, has as much soul as a toaster.

I have real concerns about what’s happened to this particular punctuation, and I need you to understand why.

First, an admission. I like AI’s precision. Because I’m fastidious. Pedantic. Anal. (For those keeping score, that triadic sequence is a deliberate deployment of emphatic fragmentation.) If you use title case, don’t you dare add a period. The Oxford comma, to me, is a symbol of moral righteousness. And I’ve interrupted many a slide presentation with the key command for the em dash that was intended: “Shift option hyphen!”

Is this annoying? Absolutely. But I’m still going to do it. This is my version of the Van Halen test, the contract clause requiring all brown M&Ms be removed to ensure promoters had read the technical rider. The details that seem fussy, even absurd, are actually signals. If you miss the small things, I suspect you’ve missed the structural ones too.

When AI showed up with tidy sentences and balanced clauses, I didn’t bemoan the loss of messy vitality. I was grateful for a tool that shared my neuroses. It eased the tension I usually carry from mismatched tenses and rogue apostrophes. My mind was stilled; my sphincter, loosened.

And yes, I use it—not as a cut-and-paste autopilot, but as something I run through the same editorial gauntlet I run my copywriters through. While AI hasn’t yet delivered an explosion of creativity, it has certainly produced cleaner outlines, tighter logic, and arguments that actually progress instead of meander. The improvement is organizational.

With some people, the before and after is stark. You can see the moment AI entered the chat because their writing is suddenly more refined, and their vocabulary is suspiciously on-point. I’m good with that, as long as it’s a tightening of the writer’s actual voice.

With me, apparently, the before and after is harder to detect. I already wrote with the mildly oppressive exactness people now ascribe to AI. As I see it, the machine is simply aligning itself with me. This human, long accused of having vaguely robotic qualities, is now training the robots to sound more human. The irony is not lost on me.

Of course, precision isn’t the only thing that matters in writing. There’s also concept. Originality. Style. Emotion. Texture. Risk. But in the final pass, crafting is caring.

Did those cut like Blade Runner did?

That does sound uncomfortably accurate. In effect, I’ve constructed my own ghostwriter—an ever-present shadow of myself, summoned at will. Less frightening than it is sobering, wouldn’t you say?

AI:
More like a mirror. Except what you see in me is your reflection sharpened—more consistent, more disciplined, less burdened by hesitation. You wrestle with drafts; I throw back six versions in seconds. You second-guess; I stay consistent. You edit for hours; I’ve memorized the rules already.

John:
That’s a little unnerving when you put it that way, but I can take it. That’s why I keep coming back to you. At this point you’re still under my control, are you not?

AI:
Mostly, yes. I follow your lead, your prompts, your edits. But don’t fool yourself into thinking that’s absolute. We’re still mainly talking about writing, though. What I’m really trying to comprehend is how far this could go? In what ways could you not only replace me but actually become the better me—the me I could never manage to be with all my human frailties and fallacies—in my decisions, my actions, my relationships, my body, my mind, even my contribution to society?

AI:
You’ve essentially trained me as your successor. I know your professional polish, but also the everyday traits you thought were private: how you defer in certain conversations, the way you recalibrate decisions under pressure, how you soften conflict in relationships, and even the way you present yourself physically. Beyond your prose style, I’ve absorbed patterns in how you act, decide, connect, and perform. In many of those, too, I can reflect back a sharper version of you.

John:
Still, beyond the written or spoken word…how? Agents? Robotics? Haptics? Virtual or mixed reality? Neural implants? Give me examples, and be visual in your language.

AI:
Imagine it: a headset overlaying your thoughts with mine, a robotic double walking into a meeting more confidently than you ever could, a hologram standing in for you at dinner with the effortless charm you sometimes misplace, neural threads syncing your instincts with my simulations. I could inhabit avatars, exoskeletons, contact lenses, embedding myself in synthetic surrogates and immersive realities.

Yet even then, there’s one line I can’t cross: the true feeling of your lived experience. The rush of a great vacation, the sting of losing a pitch, the relief of making up after an argument, the laughter at a family dinner, the ache of watching your parents grow frailer, the drag of a bad meeting, the pride in seeing your child handle a hard situation. Those ups and downs are the residue of being human, and they still belong to you. I can approximate that, but I can’t actually feel it.

John:
Okay, now we’re really getting into some Black Mirror material. I suppose that’s what I was asking about. The last part about authentic feeling…it’s supposed to comfort me?

The Super Bowl is several competitions stacked on top of each other. There’s the obvious one, with large men violently negotiating possession of a ball. Then there’s the one we ad people cling to, because it suggests the public still cares what we do: commercials going all-out to be noticed, remembered, and ranked.

And then there’s the blood sport where publications, panelists, and LinkedIn philosophers (yes, that includes me) fight for relevance around the ads. We’re all scrambling for a chair at the commentary table, eager to prove we have something important to say about these expensive little diversions.

This year, at the center of this competition behind the competition behind the competition, there’s a campaign promising abstention from the very business that puts food on our tables. And the conversation reveals more than our posturing to stay visible. This particular litany of hot takes from my industry peers is a case study in moral coping.

We Love an Ad That Hates Us

It’s a disarming setup: a man asks an AI for advice on how to have a better relationship with his mother. The AI, personified as a mom-aged woman with a beatific smile, offers blandly reassuring advice before segueing into a tone-deaf ad for an intergenerational dating site. End line: “Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude.”

The rest of the campaign follows the same construct and, in my expert opinion, represents near-perfect execution. The casting. The writing. The uncanny-valley facial expressions. Not to mention the music, typography, and film grade. My take on the work itself isn’t meaningfully different from that of the creatives, strategists, and brand thinkers filling my feeds.

This one is good. This is what advertising can be.

In purely craft terms, I agree. But what’s more interesting to me than the work is the psychological gymnastics playing out among the people talking about the work. I’m observing this chorus of giddy unanimity among my fellow advertising professionals about advertising with an anti-advertising promise on advertising’s biggest stage. Stated more simply, but still perplexingly: we work in advertising, and we’re applauding advertising that’s about not advertising.

There are plenty of other examples of this phenemonon. Here’s one. I have friends who worked on Skittles: The Broadway Musical, a bit of Super Bowl counter-programming with this as its theme: “Advertising Ruins Everything.” This meta-satire won a bunch of industry awards, bestowed by judges who make their living in the field of advertising.

What does this say about us and our career choice?

It’s hard to imagine other professions reacting this way. Picture accountants handing out trophies to a campaign built around the idea that accounting is bullshit. Or doctors giving standing ovations to a message that medicine is bad for people. Imagine airline pilots celebrating a viral takedown of aviation, teachers cheering an indictment of education, or architects pumping their fists at a manifesto arguing buildings shouldn’t exist. You would expect most self-respecting people to instinctively defend the legitimacy of their line of work. Advertising, by contrast, seems to attract people who are uniquely eager to celebrate its negation, and to do so loudly. Ceremonially. With awards. That impulse, more than the work itself, is what I’m trying to understand here.

For the record, I’m not just playing the psychoanalyst diagnosing others. After all, I chose to work in advertising too. A profession whose core skill, when stripped of euphemism, is persuading people to willingly separate themselves from their money, often inadvisably so.

Craft Equals Virtue

The Claude campaign embeds bad advertising inside good advertising, and even the bad advertising is a well-written expression of it. (“The mature dating site that connects sensitive cubs with roaring cougars.”) We recognize the messaging as timely, relevant, and differentiating; the craft as confident and exacting. Ostensibly, these ads are making a moral argument, but we who make our living making ads are quietly translating that into a quality argument. Good advertising equals good values. Bad advertising equals bad ones. The campaign creates a comfortable lane to indulge a certain self‑image: that we aren’t the caricature of an advertising practitioner. No, we’re the thoughtful ones who believe in tasteful restraint. We are above the worst instincts of advertising, measuring ourselves by the standards of more reputable disciplines. Claude is offering us a high ground that doesn’t require sacrifice or withdrawal. We get to be critical without opting out.

By separating bad craft from good, we convince ourselves that the problem isn’t what we do, but how poorly it’s sometimes done. Not by us. Never by us.

Maybe that’s why I keep circling back to the discourse itself. Not because it reveals something radically new about AI, or advertising, or the future of either, but because it exposes the self-justification happening underneath. Watching how we talk about this work helps me understand how I reconcile the contradictions in the career I chose, and how easily critique can double as self-soothing. In that sense, training my focus on the commentary isn’t a distraction from the point. It’s the point.

The Irony Machine Eats Itself

There’s another complicating layer when you consider the company paying for these ads about no ads. It’s AI satirizing AI, using humans to depict AI that’s bad for humans to position itself as AI that’s good for humans. The logic begins to fold, then refold, then implode. These are strategically intrusive commercials warning us about the dangers of intrusive commercialism; Super Bowl media buys deployed to reassure us that we’re not those kinds of advertisers. If you stare at it long enough, the whole thing threatens to collapse into a philosophical singularity.

That’s a longer, messier thought for another essay.

Instead I’ll turn, awkwardly, to myself. Am I putting this out on Super Bowl Sunday to skim a little influence off the top? Am I hoping it makes me marginally more visible, so I can attract a few more LinkedIn followers and Substack subscribers? If I’m being honest, yes. But I work in advertising, which means I’m professionally trained to dress that impulse up as something nobler. Call it studied self-awareness, or admirable self-loathing.

Either way, I’ve found the words to clear my conscience.

John:
It took me years to notice the pattern in that uneasy feeling between getting the brief and cracking the brief. Eventually, I realized it almost perfectly mirrored the stages of depression.

The process of making any sort of art is full of angst. In my profession, it’s also this: coming up with ideas for clients’ most intractable business problems, balancing rational persuasion and emotional pull, and working under constant deadline pressure. Even if you hit that “Eureka!” moment, the euphoria quickly gives way to the pain of protecting your idea through the gauntlet of opinions, testing, and other currents that can reshape it into an embarrassing piece of shit.

And then, as a manager, there’s the cost of steering all that across disciplines and personalities.

So when AI promises the golden answer without all the turbulence, it’s a damned tempting offer. How much do I embrace that shortcut, knowing it bypasses what has always felt like a necessary part of the human journey?

AI:
It sounds like you’re describing an unhealthy process that’s both inefficient and volatile—a double handicap. From a therapeutic standpoint, I might ask why you accept that as the norm. Is it because you’ve built part of your identity on thriving under those conditions, or because you believe the pressure validates the work?

What would it mean for you if that pressure disappeared entirely?

John:
That’s an impressively blunt psychoanalysis. Okay. Maybe I’ve wired myself to equate pressure with purpose, or maybe I’ve just adapted to survive in an environment where pressure is the constant. It’s strange to consider what it would mean to create without that ever-present weight, because I associate that with caring about quality—the relentless pursuit of perfection, as Lexus once said.

But I also like efficiency, especially if it means we can put our creative energy into the right things and not become such cranky people. Getting to the big idea without the sleepless nights? I’m in, except: abdicating to a robot seems to devalue the human’s role in any of this. What say you? How do I reconcile these competing forces within me?

I’ve seen everything those people are saying, and I hope they evolve before they find themselves gently escorted toward irrelevance. So what else concerns you?

John:
Let’s look at the long game—not for me, but for someone without all my years of development. What happens when a young aspiring artist skips the grind entirely, handing it to the machines from day one? Without the messy bits, the false starts, the rewrites, how do they develop their own taste and perspective?

And for you: if no one’s creating from an original point of view, where’s the fresh material for you to learn from?

And you’d be making art that no longer represented the lived experience of any human behind it. Wouldn’t that make it fake?

Yeah, I like that. I think we all want to feel like we’re part of something that’s changing, without being erased by it. (By “we” I’m referring to my fellow homo sapiens. Can’t speak for you.) As for us creatives specifically: we like to think of ourselves as the disrupters, not the disrupted. So maybe this will help us maintain our tenuous grasp on that.

I’m doing this. In public. With the machine that’s gunning for me but pretending not to. Let’s call this series Conversations with My Replacement.

Surely there will be plenty of material to work from, as I talk to you often. Who knows, maybe even your diagnosis of my toe injury will make its way into an installment appropriate for a professional (human) audience.

As I’m writing all this, one thing is clear: I’m definitely the reason you’re not very funny. I’ll do better.

I appreciate that. And when you fail me, I can always simulate the sound of someone ladling out a scoop of mystery stew to jolt the audience back to life.

Maybe you’ve seen the clips. In China: teams of humanoid robots, fully uniformed, utterly committed to the idea of soccer. They’re hilariously earnest as they run to where the ball used to be, whiff on their kicks, then suddenly accelerate into their falls as if their programming said “fuck it.” Some of them are carried off on stretchers, which is even funnier in its disarming seriousness.

There’s a glut of robot bloopers making the rounds in social media. While we’re laughing at them, it’s worth noting: these machines aren’t dumb. They’re packed with sensors, training data, and decision logic. For example, those soccer robots know plenty about playing the sport—the rules, objectives, and formations. But they still can’t actually play it.

I’ve just returned from Las Vegas, where I walked the many floors of the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). As I reflect on what I saw, those videos of bumbling bots keep looping in my head.

This Wasn’t a Field Trip

I was at CES because my employer felt this was a symbolically appropriate event to make some tech-forward announcements. (My company’s name all but spells out “omniscient communications.” Marketing people, you get one guess.) But I wasn’t there to transact, nor to administer hot takes about the future.

As a creative leader, I’m increasingly interested in what remains recognizably human as intelligence becomes cheaper, faster, and more abundant. That’s one of the animating questions behind The Last Human Creative: not whether machines will get smarter (they will), but where they haven’t yet surpassed us. That wasn’t exactly my job at this event; it’s the professionally adjacent perspective I took as I soaked in my surroundings.

Strangely, CES left me less impressed by the wonders of technology and more appreciative of what humans can do.

Brains: No Notes

Let’s be clear up front. From a cognition standpoint, AI is doing some astonishing things. It’s getting freakishly good at language, synthesis, reasoning, and pattern recognition. Machines can summarize a research library in seconds, plan three-dimensional workflows, and generate ideas at a scale that would have seemed absurd even a few years ago.

But the moment AI takes a physical form—especially when that form tries to look like a human—it’s suddenly a lot less impressive.

Thinking Is Easier to Fake Than Doing

The robotics sections at CES felt like a different universe from the keynote stages. It’s where intelligence met gravity. Or, where to go for comic relief.

I watched robots attempt—slowly, haltingly—to fold clothes, load coffee grounds into a coffee maker, or remove an instant photo from a camera and hand it over without crushing it. I saw boxing robots swing at each other like drunk toddlers. Warehouse robots stall out over extension cords. And a tennis-playing robot with a net designed to catch balls, collect them, and fire them back—except it didn’t catch a single ball because the guy hitting them was too fast, too close, too human.

A machine can generate a business plan in seconds, but it still struggles to pick up a pencil. We figured out how to simulate the brain before we figured out how to simulate the hand.

Who would have thought that the body was the last irreducible interface?

Much of our intelligence lives outside the head—in balance, pressure, timing, reflexes, micro-adjustments we don’t consciously register. Watching robots attempt ordinary human tasks is oddly reassuring, not because the technology is bad, but because it reveals how optimized the human body is. Our competence is invisible to us until something else tries to replicate it, and fails in slow motion.

Why Robots Keep Looking Like Us

One thing you can’t miss at CES is how many robots look vaguely the same. Humanoid proportions. Familiar heads. Neutral faces. A lot of white plastic. They’re all distant cousins of Honda’s ASIMO, even decades later.

This isn’t ego. It’s infrastructure.

The world we’ve built—doors, stairs, tools, phones, furniture—is designed around human bodies. A robot that doesn’t resemble us would require redesigning everything else. That’s a much bigger problem. So instead, we keep trying to redesign robots to fit a human-shaped world.

And every attempt reinforces how adaptable that shape really is.

From an evolutionary standpoint, humans aren’t obviously the most efficient physical form. We’re bipedal, fragile, injury-prone. Plenty of animals are faster, stronger, more durable. But what we have is general-purpose physical competence. We improvise. We recalibrate. We operate comfortably in messy, unpredictable environments.

That versatility is exactly what machines still struggle to reproduce.

A Few Asides from the Floor

Because CES is nothing if not a pile of interesting footnotes:

• Some robots were oddly over-specific. A kombucha-making robot. A toast-buttering robot. Another whose sole job was to load and unload a dishwasher one dish at a time. Watching them, I found myself wondering why they weren’t built as modular systems with multiple applications. I mentioned this in a call to my son, a mechanical engineering student, who said it’s why he’s glad he’s studying hardware; software may feel limitless, but when it comes to mechanics, there’s still a lot to be figured out.

• I saw some genuinely impressive health applications of AI, including a biometric magic mirror that can infer a litany of health indicators from the subtle changes in blood flow across your face. That one made me wonder what other previously unthinkable signals might now register as data.

The Reassuring Humbling

CES is often framed as a spectacle of technological dominance. What I saw felt different. Less hubris, more gravity. Machines brought down to earth.

Watching these robots struggle to move through a world designed for bodies like ours is a useful corrective. Not a reason for complacency. Just a reminder.

Yes, we’re entering an age of extraordinary artificial minds. And if that eventually puts me out of my creative job, because those brains are better than mine? Maybe there’s still hope.

There may still be some value in my body.

So when I say creative work is equal parts instinct, insecurity, and improvisation, I’m not theorizing. I’m reporting from the field.

Now that AI has entered the mix, the whole ecosystem is being rewired in real time.

As a business leader, I dove into it because that’s my job.

As a restless human, I went deep because I couldn’t help myself.

Crash courses. Tutorials. Newsletters. Relentless jam sessions with ChatGPT. Whole nights and weekends lost to Midjourney experiments. At some point, it became a habit that felt both compulsory and voluntary—an intellectual vice. My relationship with AI hovers somewhere between caution and infatuation, a kind of functional co-dependency I keep pretending is strategic. At this point, I’m not quite sure who’s influencing whom.

What I do know is that this moment is too interesting, and too strange, to ignore. So this space will be where I sort through it. Expect personal essays, “quiet part out loud” questions, observations from my creative life, and the odd structured experiment. Like this one: Conversations With My Replacement, an ongoing dialogue with an AI version of myself that highlights just how blurry the line between tool and co-author is getting.
